Pickling &
Passivation Services

RSC Group provides pickling and passivation services for stainless steel surfaces used in industrial equipment, piping, tanks and fabricated components.

Pickling and passivation are key surface treatment processes that remove contaminants, address surface conditions after fabrication and welding, and support stainless steel corrosion resistance.

RSC approaches each project based on the material condition, treatment requirements, and the asset’s operating environment.

Stainless Steel
Pickling & Passivation

Stainless steel relies on a thin, chromium-rich passive layer to protect its surface against corrosion. Welding, fabrication and exposure to certain contaminants can compromise the condition of this protective layer. Stainless steel pickling and passivation are two distinct but complementary processes used to prepare and treat affected surfaces.

Pickling is a chemical surface treatment that removes heat tint, oxide scale and the chromium-depleted surface layer associated with welding and heat treatment. It helps restore a clean, suitable stainless steel surface.

Passivation removes free iron and certain surface contaminants, supporting the formation of a protective chromium-rich oxide layer that improves the material’s resistance to corrosion.

The required treatment depends on the stainless steel grade, the surface condition, and the relevant project specification.

Our Pickling & Passivation Capabilities

Pickling and passivation can support the preparation, maintenance and rehabilitation of stainless steel assets across a range of industrial applications.

Typical applications include:

  • Stainless steel piping and pipework
  • Industrial tanks and process vessels
  • Fabricated stainless steel components
  • Welded joints and surrounding surfaces
  • Industrial plant and processing equipment
  • Stainless steel structures and fittings
  • New fabrication and refurbishment projects

Treatment requirements vary by material, surface condition, and intended operating environment. Some applications may require pickling, passivation or a combination of both processes.

Supporting Corrosion Resistance
& Surface Integrity

Contamination, heat tint and surface irregularities can affect the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, particularly in environments exposed to moisture, chemicals and demanding operating conditions.

Pickling and passivation help address these risks by removing unwanted surface materials and supporting the restoration of the stainless steel’s natural protective properties.

These treatments can form part of new construction, fabrication, planned maintenance or asset rehabilitation, depending on the condition and requirements of the equipment.

Planning Pickling & Passivation Around the Asset

Effective stainless steel surface treatment begins with understanding the material, existing surface condition and project requirements.

The appropriate treatment process must consider the stainless steel grade, extent of contamination, access requirements and surrounding working conditions. Cleaning, chemical treatment, rinsing and inspection requirements are determined according to the selected method and applicable specification.

For industrial facilities, treatment activities must also be planned around operational constraints, equipment configuration and relevant safety and environmental controls.

RSC’s wider industrial capabilities include corrosion protection, surface preparation, industrial cleaning and access solutions. Where required, these services can be coordinated within a broader maintenance or rehabilitation programme.
